National Cotton Production Sets New Record in 2006

China Cotton Association revealed that cotton production stood at 6.7 million tons in 2006, a surge of 17.5 percent.

During this period, the total procurement of lint cotton reached 4.42 million tons, a hike of 13 percent over last year, accounting 66 percent of estimated total cotton production.

Out of this, Xinjiang acquired 1.48 million tons, accounting for 64 percent of the expected output.

In November, average purchase price of unginned cotton was 2.6 yuan per kg and prices of cotton seeds increased by 0.1 percent. In some areas, price of unginned cotton price was 2.7 yuan per kg, a rise of 0.1 yuan over previous month.

For first eleven months, cotton imports amounted to 3.4026 million tons, exceeding 53.15 percent over the same period of last year. In November, China imported 1,55,000 tons of cotton, a hike of 82.4 percent than previous month and reduction of 70,000 tons over same period last year.

In November, large scale textile enterprises produced 1.57 million tons of yarn, an increase of 2.9 percent over last month and 15.1 percent on year-on-year basis.
