Domestic Exports of Textiles & Knitting Fall in 2006

In 2006, the value of domestic exports classified to the four major industries of textiles; wearing apparel and machinery, equipment together accounted for 72% of Hong Kong’s total domestic exports, according to statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD).
In 2006, the value of domestic exports classified to the machinery and equipment industry fell by $5.2 billion or 24.3% compared with 2005 to $16.3 billion, that to wearing apparel industry by $1.8 billion or 7.8% to $21.8 billion, and that to the textiles industry by $2.7 billion or 7.3% to $34.6 billion.
The above statistics of domestic exports classified by industrial origin are derived by re-grouping the merchandise domestic export items originally grouped under the external trade classification system according to the industries in which these merchandise items are normally produced. Transactions in gold and specie are not included.
The industrial classification used is the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC). The HSIC is to be distinguished from the United Nations Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) used in the regular trade statistics reports. In comparison, the HSIC is more related to production processes whereas the SITC is more geared to end uses of products.
The value of domestic exports classified to the textiles (including knitting) industry in 2006 was HK$34628.2 million. The value of domestic exports classified to the textiles (including knitting) industry in 2005 was HK$37354.1 million. Value change of domestic exports classified to the textiles (including knitting) industry was HK$-2725.8 million. Percentage change of domestic exports classified to the textiles (including knitting) industry was -7.3%.
The value of domestic exports classified to the wearing apparel (except footwear) industry in 2006 was HK$21762.2 million. The value of domestic exports classified to the wearing apparel (except footwear) industry in 2005 was HK$23605.4 million. Value change of domestic exports classified to the wearing apparel (except footwear) industry was HK$-1843.2 million. Percentage change of domestic exports classified to the wearing apparel (except footwear) industry was -7.8%.
The value of domestic exports classified to the leather and leather products (except footwear and wearing apparel) industry in 2006 was HK$49.2 million. The value of domestic exports classified to the leather and leather products (except footwear and wearing apparel) industry in 2005 was HK$84.0 million. Value change of domestic exports classified to the leather and leather products (except footwear and wearing apparel) industry was HK$-34.8 million. Percentage change of domestic exports classified to the leather and leather products (except footwear and wearing apparel) industry was -41.4%.
The value of domestic exports classified to the footwear (except rubber, plastic and wooden footwear) industry in 2006 was HK$46.0 million. The value of domestic exports classified to the footwear (except rubber, plastic and wooden footwear) industry in 2005 was HK$25.4 million. Value change of domestic exports classified to the footwear (except rubber, plastic and wooden footwear) industry was HK$+20.6 million. Percentage change of domestic exports classified to the footwear (except rubber, plastic and wooden footwear) industry was +80.9%.
Total value of domestic exports in 2006 was HK$ 132508.2 million. Total value of domestic exports in 2005 was HK$ 133984.8 million. Value change of total domestic exports was HK$ -1476.6 million. Percentage change of total domestic exports was -1.1%.
