Minister Chen Deming met with Delegation of US-APEC Business Federation, headed by Myron Brilliant, senior vice president for International Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in Vladivostok, Russia, on September 8, 2012. The delegation members include chiefs from 27 US companies such as AT&T, Cargill, Caterpillar Inc., DHL, Dow Chemical Company, Johnson & Johnson, Wal-Mart, General Electric Company, Boeing Company, Microsoft, Time Warner Inc., etc. Mr. Chen listened to advice and suggestions by the entrepreneurs on developing China-US trade and economic relations, and responded to issues of their concerns.
Mr. Chen said that entrepreneurs are the cornerstone for China-US cooperation. Currently, world economy is under downside pressure and it will last for a period of time. China hopes to strengthen trade and economic cooperation with all countries to tide over the hard time. In order to advance China-US economic cooperation, China would like to continue to open trade and investment to the US, but meanwhile the US should actively deal with China’s reasonable concern. China supports Chinese enterprises to invest in the US; however, we noticed that when Chinese enterprises invest in the US, especially when they purchase US enterprises, they face frequent investigations and restrictions by US related departments in the name of national security. It is hoped that the two sides can join efforts to advance the negotiation on bilateral investment protection agreement, so as to create favorable conditions for bilateral investment.
Myron Brilliant said that the US industrial and business circles are a backing to US-China relations. The US hopes to strengthen ties with the Chinese government and establish forceful cooperation relations. All circles of the US support the development of China-US relations, and the sustainable development of bilateral trade and economic relations are the premise for this. The US hopes Chinese Ministry of Commerce will continue to promote Chinese enterprises to invest in the US, and continue to care and support US-funded enterprises in China, and actively create investment conditions for them. The US spoke highly of the achievements China has made in IPR protection, and hoped China will continue the efforts in this aspect.
On the same day, Mr. Chen also met with Canadian International Trade Minister Ed Fast, and exchanged views on expanding China-Canada trade and economic cooperation. Assistant Minister of Commerce Yu Jianhua attended related activities.
